The "Soros-Kyrgyzstan" fund, which coordinates the activities of the "Soros" international fund throughout Central Asia, is suspending its activities in the republic in connection with the adoption of the law on foreign agents.

"The fund is managed by citizens of Kyrgyzstan, but receives funding from abroad, which inevitably exposes it to new legislative restrictions," the organization said in a statement.

It was noted that the fund allocated about 115 million dollars to support various projects in Kyrgyzstan during its 30 years of operation.

In October 2023, the Kyrgyz Law and Order Committee approved amendments to the Law on Non-Commercial Organizations. A number of human rights activists have called the bill a copy of Russia's law on foreign agents. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken sent a letter to the Kyrgyz President Sadir Japarov and expressed his concern that if the document is adopted, non-governmental organizations will be subject to civil and criminal penalties.

In turn, Japarov replied to Blinken: "Do not interfere in our internal affairs."

The above law was signed by Kyrgyz President Japarov on April 2.
