Masharipov was found guilty of 39 murders and 79 attempted murders. In September 2020, the court sentenced him to 40 life sentences with aggravating circumstances and 1,368 years in prison on each count.
The Supreme Court also considered the appeals of 31 other convicts involved in the club attack case who were serving various sentences. Their sentences were also upheld.
On the night of January 1, 2017, a terrorist attack at the Reina nightclub in the Ortaköy district of Istanbul killed 39 people, 16 of whom were foreigners, including a Russian woman. The victims included citizens of Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya and Israel. It was revealed that the attacker was Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek national, who was soon arrested in one of the districts of Istanbul. The Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
