Akaev was denied the status of former president of Kyrgyzstan
The Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan opposed the restoration of the former president's status of Askar Akaev, the first head of the republic. The current president Sadir Japarov said that he will not have any influence on the work of the parliament.
The Kyrgyz Parliament has opposed the restoration of the former president status of Askar Akaev, the first head of the republic, the press service of the country's parliament reports.
It is noted that the deputies supported the position of the relevant parliamentary committee, which recommended rejecting Akaev's request.
In June, the first president of Kyrgyzstan appealed to the speaker of Jogorku Kenesh to restore his status. The restoration of the status allows the politician not to be prosecuted for his actions during the presidency, as well as to receive a large pension.
Commenting on this situation, the current head of state Sadir Japarov assured that he does not want to influence the work of the parliament.
Let's remind that Akaev was overthrown from power in March 2005. In 2021, he returned to Bishkek for the first time to testify in the Kumtor case. After that, President Sadir Japarov announced that Akaev had completely corrected his previous mistakes and the General Prosecutor's Office had closed the criminal case against him.
In his next interview, Japarov expressed a positive opinion about the former leader. Later, Akaev announced his intention to return to Kyrgyzstan after retirement.
