The Taliban government in Kabul has announced that it has severed consular relations with a number of embassies in Western countries that remain loyal to Afghanistan's former administration.

After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, many diplomats serving in foreign missions found themselves in an uncertain situation, promising to continue serving the former government.

No country has yet officially recognized the Taliban government, but over the past three years, Kabul officials have appointed ambassadors to some neighboring embassies.

But on Tuesday, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was "not responsible" for credentials, passports and visas that do not meet the requirements of the new government in Kabul.

In particular, relations with the country's embassies in London and Berlin, as well as in countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Greece, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Canada and Australia, have been officially severed .

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly called on political and consular missions of Afghanistan in European countries to establish contact with Kabul," the statement said. " Unfortunately, the actions of most missions are carried out arbitrarily, without coordination and in clear violation of existing generally accepted principles . "

According to the statement, Afghans living abroad should be engaged in missions related to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

At the moment, the Afghan embassies in Pakistan, China and Russia are operating under the orders of the Taliban government.

Embassies cut off from Kabul are in dire financial straits, relying mostly on consular fees to pay staff salaries, rent and fees. Without these revenues, it would be difficult for them to operate .
