The people will decide whether to reinstate the death penalty – Sadir Japarov

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has commented on the initiative to restore the death penalty. The politician stated that the people will decide its fate.

The discussion was sparked by the tragic death of 17-year-old Aisuluv Mukasheva, who was brutally murdered in late September. The public demanded greater accountability for crimes against women and children. According to the president, he has personally taken control of the investigation and instructed the administration to prepare amendments to the laws to increase punishment.

Sadir Japarov noted that the number of crimes related to the murder and rape of minors and women is increasing, and that "usual" prison terms are no longer deterring criminals. He also said that corruption crimes cannot be punished with the death penalty, but only brutal murder and pedophilia.

Japarov also responded to concerns about the possibility of judicial errors. According to him, in the 21st century, there are technical opportunities - video recording and online broadcasts - to conduct investigations and trials transparently.

"We will not solve this issue alone. We will consult with the people. The issue can be put to a national referendum. If the majority supports it, then it will be necessary to make amendments to the Constitution and laws, as well as review international obligations," Japarov said.
