Jewish officials who have defended Israel's interests are also turning their backs on Biden
A US Interior Department official has become the first Jewish official to publicly resign in protest of Israel's tacit support for its "genocidal" war in Gaza. "In light of President Biden's devastating and continued support for Israel's genocide in Gaza, I can no longer in good conscience represent this administration," said Lily Greenberg Coll.
Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Interior Coll accused Biden of using Jews to justify US wartime policies, saying his ancestors were killed by "state-sponsored violence."
“In light of President Biden's devastating and continued support for Israel's genocide in Gaza, I can no longer in good conscience represent this administration. I think the president needs to know that there are people in his administration who think this is dangerous," Lily Greenberg Call wrote in her resignation letter.
It should be noted that this is already the fifth case of a middle or high-level administration employee resigning in protest.
Coll pointed to Biden's comments, including one at a White House Hanukkah event where he said, "If it weren't for Israel, there wouldn't be a safe Jew in the world."
"Over the past eight months, the United States has taken little opportunity to hold Israel accountable. "On the contrary, we have supported and legitimized Israel's actions by vetoing UN resolutions holding Israel accountable," Coll wrote.
Coll studied at the University of California, Berkeley. Later, he worked on the presidential campaigns of Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Before being appointed by the US government in February 2023, he was a longtime advocate for Israel in Washington and elsewhere.
"What Israel has done to the people of Gaza and to the Palestinians seems to me a disgrace to our ancestors," he told The Washington Post.
