Azerbaijan expels pro-Russian publication

The representative office of the Russia Today media group in Azerbaijan (Sputnik Azerbaijan) has ceased its activities, said Aykhan Hajizade, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

According to Hajizadeh, a Russian company can only obtain accreditation for one correspondent in Azerbaijan. The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the information.

Earlier, the Azerbaijani government demanded the closure of the BBC Azerbaijan service's Baku office. BBC journalists suspended their work in Baku until the situation was clarified. Representatives of a number of media corporations described this decision as a "restriction of press freedom." The office of the American Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Russian organization "Rossotrudnichestvo" were also expelled from the country.
