Due to the large number of victims of the coronavirus, cremation centers are working day and night

As a result of the increase in cases of infection of the new strain of coronavirus - JN.1 worldwide, the number of victims has also increased sharply. In particular, 119,000 new cases of infection were recorded in China, 7,557 of them are in severe or critical condition. The number of victims has not been disclosed.

However, cremation centers are said to have switched to round-the-clock operations following the spike in COVID-related deaths.

"Many private funeral homes have been opened in three years. Now, cremation centers are open every day and bodies are stored in freezers. There are long queues for cremation," said a local resident of Henan province, where the disease has spread.

It is noted that a similar situation is observed in India. However, Rajeev Jayadevan, vice president of the National Medical Association's COVID Task Force, said the situation is not dire. "As expected, a few deaths have been reported, but most do not require hospitalization. Severe disease tends to affect the elderly and those with co-morbidities," Jayadevan said.

The WHO described the new strain as an "interesting possibility" because of its rapid spread. However, it was noted that the new variant is sensitive to existing vaccines and does not pose a pandemic risk.
