Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to increase the number of soldiers in the Russian army by approximately 180,000 , bringing the total number of military personnel to more than 2,389,000 .

The relevant decision was published on the portal of regulatory legal documents on Monday, September 16 , and will enter into force on December 1, 2024.

"I decided to set the staff level of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation at 2,389,130 units, including 1,500,000 military personnel," the document reads.

Putin instructed the Russian government to allocate funds from the federal budget to the Ministry of Defense of the country, necessary for the implementation of paragraph 1 of this Decree.

The personnel composition of the Armed Forces was last changed in December 2023. At that time, it increased to 2,209,130 people, including 1,320,000 military personnel. Later, the number of military personnel was increased to 170 thousand people.
