At the end of June, representatives of the Central Intelligence Agency held a secret meeting with Russian intelligence officers in one of the capitals of the Middle East, writes TRT. The meeting discussed the latest offer to exchange prisoners in the US, including Vadim Krasikov, a Russian accused of killing Zelimkhan Khankoshvili in Germany.

According to CNN, the main point of the agreement was the offer to replace Krasikov with Americans Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich. Russia agreed to the deal in early July, and it was approved on July 17. President Biden was instrumental in persuading German Chancellor Scholtz to release Krasikov.

Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, confirmed that the talks were mainly between the FSB and the Central Intelligence Agency.

As a result of the exchange, ten people returned to Russia, including Krasikov. The USA received three citizens and one "green card" holder. Several individuals, including one sentenced to death in Belarus, have been extradited to Germany.

The White House announced the return of Whelan, Gershkovich, Kurmasheva and Kara-Murza, but Kara-Murza was not among those greeted by Biden and Harris on the flight deck.

Earlier, it was known that Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MİT) mediated the operation to exchange 26 prisoners from seven countries. The exchange of prisoners was carried out at the airport of Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
