Now those who teach religious teachings without permission in Uzbekistan can be imprisoned

In accordance with the law signed by the President, Article 229-2 of the Criminal Code was amended to make it a crime to provide religious education without special religious education, without permission from the central governing body of a religious organization, or in a private manner.

Such actions are punishable by a fine of 50 to 100 BHM (from 20.6 million to 41.2 million soums), up to 360 hours of compulsory community service, up to three years of correctional labor, up to three years of restriction of liberty, or up to three years of imprisonment.

Currently, violating the procedure for teaching religious teachings to citizens, including minors, is punishable by a fine of 5 to 10 times the minimum wage or up to 15 days in prison.

The law will enter into force 3 months after the date of its official publication (November 9, 2025).

It should be noted that in Uzbekistan there is still no legal way for children under the age of 18 to receive religious education.
