Kyrgyzstan may limit the number of mosques

The Kyrgyz government wants to limit the number of mosques, temples, churches, and other religious sites in populated areas.

The draft resolution on this issue was submitted for public discussion.

According to the State Commission for Religious Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, a campaign to register previously built but unregistered religious sites in the country has begun in 2021.

During this campaign, 644 illegal religious institutions were identified. By the beginning of 2023, more than 200 similar structures were identified.

At the same time, local government departments are receiving requests for financial assistance for the construction of a mosque every day, the report says.

The reason for the limited number of mosques in the country is that construction work is being carried out without taking into account the needs of the population.
