In Uzbekistan, prisoners can reduce their sentence by 3 days by reading 1 book
A new opportunity is being created in Uzbekistan to reduce the length of sentences for prisoners. According to a new draft law, a prisoner who reads one book and passes an exam will have their sentence reduced by 3 days.
This initiative, approved in the first reading in the Legislative Chamber, is aimed at morally reforming prisoners, facilitating their adaptation to society, and supporting their personal development.
According to the new law, prisoners must read books from a specially approved list and pass an exam in accordance with the established procedure. If they successfully pass the exam, 3 days will be deducted from the sentence. Also, this activity of the prisoner can be taken into account when considering conditional release or commutation of the sentence to a lighter one.
According to the draft law, it is planned to introduce a new Article 74-1 into the Criminal Code, Article 536-1 into the Criminal Procedure Code, and Article 80-1 into the Criminal Executive Code.
The bill has not yet been fully adopted and is expected to be discussed in subsequent readings.
