Why did Modi complain about Trump?
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to speak to Donald Trump by phone four times in recent weeks, the FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) newspaper reported.
According to the publication's sources, Modi is unhappy with the US president's call for India's economy to be "dead" and the imposition of an additional 25% tariff on Indian products. Modi viewed Trump's actions as an insult to Indians.
Negotiations to reach a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement began after Modi's visit to Washington in February. The goal is to increase trade between the two countries to $500 billion by 2030. An Indian delegation has traveled to Washington several times to reach this agreement. The agreement was expected to be signed in the fall, but a visit by a US delegation to India for the sixth round of talks, scheduled for August 25, was canceled.
