US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin announced the inclusion of Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Great Britain and other countries in the coalition .

As a result of attacks on ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea by Yemeni militias , the United States announced the formation of a multi-state coalition to protect maritime trade in the region.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Monday that Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, the Seychelles and Britain would be among the countries joining the 10-nation "multinational security initiative".

Austin said in a statement that "countries committed to upholding the fundamental principle of freedom of movement must come together to address the challenge posed by this non-state actor," calling the attacks "a problem that requires collective action."

At least 12 shipping companies, including Italy-Swiss giant Mediterranean Shipping Company, France's CMA CGM and Denmark's AP Moller-Maersk, have suspended Red Sea voyages over security concerns following the private attacks. The British oil company BP also announced on Monday that it will navigate these waters.
