The US has told Qatar it must expel Hamas leaders if the group continues to reject a peace deal with Israel. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing an American official.

It is noted that US Secretary of State Blinken told his Qatari counterpart al-Thani about this in April. Emirati officials have already advised Hamas' political leadership to develop a backup plan in case they are forced to leave.

"Putting pressure on Hamas in Doha is ineffective. The problem is that the decision makers are in Gaza and they don't care where the political office is," the official said.

According to the Washington Post, "Hamas' office in Qatar was created as part of a US-Israeli-backed deal. For more than 10 years, Qatar, in coordination with Israel, sent money to Gaza to help the Hamas-led government. "
