Spain officially recognized Palestine

The Spanish Council of Ministers approved the decision to officially recognize Palestine as an independent state. Pilar Alegria, the official representative of the government and the Minister of Education, informed about this after the meeting of the Royal Council of Ministers. "This is a historic decision, the only goal of which is to ensure peace," he said.

This decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Royal Council of Ministers

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, for his part, called this step a "turning point" and "the only way to achieve peace" in the Middle East.

He noted that there is no alternative to a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue.

The minister informed that in the near future Slovenia will also recognize the independence of Palestine.

This morning, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that recognizing a Palestinian state is not only "the implementation of historical justice to fulfill the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people", but also a step towards peace in the Middle East.

The prime minister stressed that East Jerusalem should become the capital of independent Palestine, and the Gaza Strip and the West Bank should be under the control of a single Palestinian national government. Sanchez also pointed to the need for a corridor connecting Gaza and the West Bank.

According to the politician, Madrid does not recognize changes to the borders of 1967 that the parties did not agree on.

Norway and Ireland also announced their official recognition of Palestine.
