Russian courts will now be able to dispose of American property located in the country to compensate for damages caused by the seizure of Russian assets in the United States. The relevant permits are included in the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the procedure for compensating Russia for the damage caused by the inadvertent actions of the United States, writes "TASS".
Moscow says Western countries will respond strongly to the confiscation of its assets.
We are talking about movable and immovable property of the USA as a state, American companies and even individual citizens existing on the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as their securities, shares in the authorized capital of Russian companies, etc.
Property rights of the United States and Americans in Russia
The list of assets and funds that "may be used" to compensate for the damage caused by the seizure of Russian assets in the United States, including the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, is determined by the government commission on foreign investment control.
The order also specifies that a copyright owner from Russia may apply to a court under Russian law to determine wrongful taking of property by the United States.
"The decision to determine the fact of the unjustified deprivation of property rights of the Russian copyright owner and to compensate for the damage caused implies the cancellation of the rights to the property of the United States or a US citizen included in this list," the document says.
Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, stated earlier that Moscow will respond firmly to the confiscation of its assets by Western countries.
Recently, the European Union approved the use of the proceeds of frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank to help Ukraine. Thanks to this, Kiev will receive 3 billion euros in 2024 alone. 90% of this amount will be used to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The confiscation and freezing of Russian assets in the West follows the imposition of sanctions after the Russian Armed Forces launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
