Germany has closed Iranian consulates in three cities
Germany has decided to close the Iranian consulates in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Munich . This was caused by the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, who has dual citizenship of Germany and Iran. According to Tehran, the decision to close the consulates creates unreasonable difficulties for Iranian citizens and violates their basic rights.
Germany's chargé d'affaires was summoned to Iran's Foreign Ministry following Berlin's decision to close three Iranian consulates, which Tehran says will limit Iranian citizens' access to consular services.
The representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Berlin's measure to stop the activities of the consular offices of the Islamic Republic in Germany is an "unjustified action". According to him, Iranian consulates in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Munich were established to "provide necessary consular services to Iranians living in Germany and protect their interests in the host country." He noted that the closure of consulates creates unreasonable difficulties for Iranian citizens and violates their basic rights.
The decision to close the consulates was made by Germany on October 31 in connection with the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a dual citizen of Germany and Iran. Sharmahd has been accused of terrorist activities, cooperation with intelligence agencies such as the CIA, FBI and Mossad , and ties to the Iranian monarchy.
He lived in the United States, was arrested in the UAE and transferred to Iran in 2020 during an intelligence operation. Sharmahd was sentenced to death in 2023, prompting Germany to recall two of its diplomats from Tehran. The sentence was confirmed in April 2024.
With the closure of the consulates, Iran's diplomatic activities in Germany will now be limited to the embassy in Berlin, reports interfax.ru.
