Four policemen were killed in a clash with supporters of the former prime minister in Pakistan

Clashes began in Pakistan between security forces and supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad. As a result, according to the latest information, 4 policemen were killed, AFP reports.

Thousands of protesters broke through the police barricade and gathered in the center of the capital. A crowd of about ten thousand is now in the center, three kilometers away from the government buildings that the opposition plans to take over.

According to Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsen Naqvi, four policemen were killed by protesters on one of the roads leading to government territory. Nine law enforcement officers were seriously injured in the clash and are currently in a critical condition. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said they were run over by a car. Naqvi warned that if any of the protesters entered the square near the government building, they would be immediately arrested.

"These subversive elements want bloodshed, not revolution. These are not peaceful demonstrations, this is extremism," said Sharif.

Since Saturday evening, all entrances to Islamabad have been closed, internet and mobile communications have been turned off, and schools and universities have been closed. Two months ago, gatherings of more than 4 people were banned in the country. More than 20,000 police officers are trying to maintain order on the streets.

The government accused the opposition of trying to disrupt the visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a three-day visit.

"We are very disappointed with our government, it doesn't know how to act," said 56-year-old protester Kalat Khan. "They treat us brutally."

Protesters are demanding the release of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan. They accuse the current head of state Shahbaz Sharif of falsifying the election results and fabricating many criminal cases against his rival Imran Khan.
