The Government of India made a terrible mistake in thinking it could so aggressively interfere with Canada's security and sovereignty. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a similarly scathing statement against India on October 18.

The announcement came two days after Ottawa expelled six Indian diplomats in connection with the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. India's Ministry of External Affairs responded by calling the allegations baseless and expelling six Canadian diplomats.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, more than a dozen Sikh activists have received threats to their lives. Among them is Moninder Singh, a member of the Sikh community in British Columbia, who was forced to leave his family due to threats.

"India has avoided accountability for years with impunity," Singh said. "They think they are so powerful that no one can stop them."

On June 18, 2023, tensions between the countries rose after the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau said there was "clear and convincing evidence" of Indian agents' involvement in the killings and other illegal activities in Canada.
India denies all the allegations and considers them politically motivated. In protest, Sikh activists demonstrated outside the Indian consulate in Toronto and demanded its closure.
