Seilikhan Ruzi, a 49-year-old Uyghur woman in China, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for teaching verses from the Quran to her children and a neighbor. According to a police statement, she was charged with "illegal clandestine religious activities."

Seylikhan Rozi's sons, Sattar Kadir and Yusuf Ahmad Kadir, were also sentenced to 7 and 10 years in prison for "taking lessons" from their mother. Also, her neighbor, Yakup Hidaet, who attended the lessons, was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

The incident is being sharply criticized by human rights activists and the international community as China's repressive policy towards Uyghur Muslims.
