Negotiations and "pleas" cannot stop the famine in Gaza

On July 17, 2025, the Israeli occupation army bombed the only Catholic church in Gaza. Three people were killed and at least ten were injured. Among the injured was Father Gabriel Romanelli, who had almost daily contact with Pope Francis.

The attack caused an international outcry. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the incident "unacceptable." The new Pope Leo limited himself to a statement of "deep sorrow," which many called "vague" and "politically weak." Israel, as usual, expressed its "regret" over the incident. A small amount of food and medicine was delivered at that time with the permission of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. This humanitarian aid was gratefully received by the Gazans.

But the question arises: why are we forced to negotiate for basic human needs guaranteed by international law - food, water, medical care, etc.?

The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and the Hague Regulations of 1907 clearly state: occupying powers are obliged to provide food, water and medical care to the population under their control! To block or delay this is not only inhumane, but also a war crime. In addition, forcibly relocating the local population or settling their own citizens in occupied territories is also against international law. And the occupying Israel systematically violates these norms.

However, instead of being punished for this, the Zionists received concessions from the international community in exchange for allowing food to enter. Recently, the European Union (EU) lifted 10 sanctions against Israel in exchange for negotiations (food access). Amnesty International called this decision “a clear betrayal of its principles.” What is even more tragic is that even that “deal” is not being implemented.

According to media reports, Israel is allowing only 80 aid trucks into Gaza per day, instead of the usual 500. Aid convoys are regularly attacked by armed gangs, and the Israeli army is firing on those protecting them.

The UN is still "ashamed" to officially declare a famine, but children in Gaza are dying of hunger every day.

The Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF), which Israel created itself, has taken over aid distribution from the UN and turned it into a tool of political control. Since May, nearly 900 people have been killed by Israeli soldiers at GHF-run distribution points.

If the EU and other countries cannot impose general sanctions, they should at least stop arms supplies, ban trade with illegal settlements, and end cooperation with institutions that support the occupation. These are not political choices - they are obligations under international law!

It is clear that appealing to Israel, "begging and pleading," is ineffective. When war crimes are ignored in exchange for temporary relief, famine becomes a weapon of war, and the lives of civilians become a political weapon.

The international community, church institutions and world leaders - must continue to provide humanitarian aid. But this is no substitute for justice. Israel must be forced to fulfill its legal and moral obligations!
