WOLAS calls on the government of Uzbekistan to protect its citizens sentenced to death in the UAE

The World Association of Lawyers (WOLAS) is fighting to save Uzbek citizens from execution in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the association said in a special statement.

As we previously reported, three Uzbeks - Olimboy Davlatyorov, Mahmudjon Kenjaboev (both 28 years old), and Azizbek Ismailov (33 years old) - were convicted of the murder of Moldovan-Israeli citizen Zvi Kogan and sentenced to death by a UAE court.

WOLAS states that this type of punishment is contrary to international law. It also states that sentences handed down by special courts are carried out under pressure and ambiguous conditions, including torture or forced testimony, which undermines the fair trial process.

In addition, the organization calls on the Uzbek government to take strong measures through diplomats in the UAE to protect their rights and ensure their protection from the death penalty and imprisonment.
