Two years since the 2023 earthquake in Turkey: recovery and change

On February 6, 2023, powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the center of the Kahramanmaraş province in Turkey, becoming one of the largest natural disasters in the country's history. The earthquake killed 53,537 people and injured 107,213.

Two years later, the earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts are still ongoing. The assistance provided by the Turkish government and the international community has accelerated the reconstruction process in the areas.

Search and rescue and relief work

More than 650,000 people, including 11,488 international specialists, 35,250 search and rescue personnel, and 142,000 security personnel, have been mobilized in the areas affected by the earthquake.

Search and rescue teams from 93 countries participated, searching through 39,000 pieces of debris. 32,770 tons of aid were sent by air and sea.

Shelters and social assistance

Temporary shelters have been set up in 11 earthquake-affected regions, and 1 million tents have been sent. More than 2.5 million people have been provided with housing.

More than 1 million 188 thousand people were accommodated in credit and hostel institutions. Education, medical care and other social services were organized for the population in container towns.

Reconstruction and damage assessment

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has assessed damage to more than 2.3 million buildings and more than 6.6 million plots.

In the process of formalizing property rights, 845,371 applications were evaluated and appropriate decisions were made. The Turkish government continues to build new housing and infrastructure in the areas most affected by the earthquake.

Assistance provided by Uzbekistan

After the earthquake, rescue teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan were sent to Turkey. Modular houses were built in the Hatay region at the expense of Uzbek citizens. Also, earthquake victims were invited to Uzbekistan for a holiday.

Recovery and future plans

Kahramanmaraş Governor Mukerrem Unluer said at a press conference that the city has been significantly restored in two years. Construction of public hospitals, schools and other social facilities continues.

The Turkish government plans to fully restore all areas affected by the earthquake by 2025.
