Syrian government hands over military base in Palmyra to Turkey
The new Syrian government has handed over a military base in Palmyra to Turkey, which is expected to have a large military infrastructure similar to the US Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Ankara said it had officially notified the United Nations (UN) and major powers of the decision. Turkey has vowed to respond forcefully to any act of aggression and is now strengthening its military presence in the region.
Palmyra has historically been a crossroads of important trade routes connecting East and West, North and South. Today, its strategic importance is increasing again.
Israel's concerns are growing
This incident is of grave concern to Israel. According to reports in the Israeli media, Turkey's military presence in Syria could pose a direct threat to Israel's security.
In particular, the possibility that Ankara could at any time direct its military forces northward toward Palmyra and expand its sphere of influence in the region would create serious problems for the Israeli side.
Israel is set to enter into negotiations with the United States to stop this process. The issue of maintaining Russian military bases in Syria to create a balance against Turkey is also expected to be discussed.
