Lavrov in Samarkand - what is the Russian Foreign Minister aiming for?
According to BBC News, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is meeting and holding talks with the President of Uzbekistan in Samarkand.
This will be the second visit to Uzbekistan by a high-ranking Russian official in the past few weeks.
Further strengthening the strategic partnership and alliance between the two countries was mentioned as one of the main issues on the agenda during both visits.
However, according to reports in some Russian publications, while laying a wreath at the foot of the "Mourning Mother" statue, Lavrov looked at the English inscription on the statue and asked, "How did the British end up here? I see the inscription is in English."
In response, a representative of the Uzbek side emphasized that there were "inscriptions in all languages." Lavrov said, "I don't see Russian."
