Kazakhstan proposes criminalizing LGBT propaganda
A deputy of the Majlis (lower house) of Kazakhstan, Adil Zhanbirshin, has proposed introducing criminal liability for LGBT propaganda in the country. He made the announcement at a press conference with the media in Astana yesterday, July 30.
"We should not limit ourselves to just a ban. If this ban is violated and LGBT propaganda is promoted on social media, in the media, or in other indirect ways, I think that not only administrative, but also criminal liability should be envisaged," the deputy said.
In addition, Adil Janbirshin recalled that last year, an official petition against LGBT propaganda collected more than 50,000 signatures in 10 days.
According to a survey conducted by the Strategy Socio-Political Research Center, 80 percent of Kazakh citizens support the introduction of legal restrictions against LGBT people.
