China's last great mosque has lost its Islamic appearance

The last major mosque in China to retain its traditional Islamic architectural features has lost its domes and changed the appearance of its minarets as part of a government campaign to synchronize mosques.

A famous Yunnan mosque, the Nazhiying Mosque, about 100 miles from Shadian, has also lost its Islamic features during recent renovations. This was reported by IslamNews with reference to The Guardian.

Shadian Mosque, one of China's grandest mosques, is located in a small town in southwestern Yunnan Province and is named after him.
Until last year, the 21,000-square-meter complex consisted of a large building with a green, tiled crescent dome surrounded by minarets and four smaller domes.

According to this year's photos, satellite images and eyewitness accounts, the dome has been removed and replaced with a Chinese pagoda-style roof, and the minarets have been shortened and converted into pagoda towers.
