A new constitution is being prepared in Turkey
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that a team of 10 lawyers has begun work on drafting a new constitution. He stressed that "the new constitution is not a matter of personal interest, but a national issue."
"We are preparing a new constitution not for ourselves, but for the Turkish nation," said the head of state.
Erdogan also added that the current constitution is outdated and retains signs of military influence.
He emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to create a modern and democratic document to replace the constitution adopted after the military coup in 1982.
The opposition is concerned that the new constitution could allow him to remain in power beyond 2028.
Critics believe that the country's leader cannot be re-elected after his term ends, except through early elections or legal changes.
For your information, the draft constitution will be submitted to parliament in the fall of 2025. At least 400 votes are required to adopt the new constitution.
