6.2 magnitude earthquake hits near Istanbul

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara.


There are no reports of casualties from the earthquake yet.


According to AFAD, the first tremor was recorded at 12:13 local time, and the second earthquake at 12:49.


The epicenters of both earthquakes were located 50 kilometers west of central Istanbul, near the city of Silivri on the coast of the Sea of Marmara.


The earthquake, which was felt in Istanbul as well as in surrounding regions, was determined to have occurred at a depth of 6.92 kilometers.


Turkish Interior Minister Ali Erlikoy made an official statement on the matter, stating that all AFAD teams and relevant institutions have begun field investigations related to the felt earthquake.
