The Iranian factor

Iran also has a strong role in the situation in Syria. Iran has supported Bashar Assad throughout the civil war. As the situation escalated again, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi met with Assad in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

On his way to Damascus, Arakchi told the press that Iran strongly supports the Syrian government and army.

During the visit of the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry to Syria and Turkey, Shia groups "Hashd al-Shaabi", "Kataib Hezbollah" and "Fatimiyoun" supported by Iran moved from Iraq to Syria. These groups fight against opposition forces and the Free Syrian Army.

According to a senior Syrian military source, dozens of Iraqi Hashed al-Shaabi forces from Iraq, linked to Iran, also entered Syria militarily near the Al-Bukamol checkpoint.

"These are new reinforcements being sent to help our frontline comrades in the north," he said, adding that the militia included Iraq's Kataib Hezbollah and Fatimiun forces.

"During the Syrian war, Iran sent thousands of fighters to Syria and helped Syrian President Bashar al-Assad," he said.

For its part, The Times of Israel reported that on the night of December 1, Israeli Air Force fighters forced an Iranian plane carrying weapons believed to be for Shiite groups to divert and turn back over Syria.

There were also reports that US warplanes struck the positions of Shiite groups located in Al-Mayadeen in eastern Syria.

Russia's attitude and position

Russia has been supporting the Assad government since 2015. Throughout the war, Moscow conducted airstrikes against opposition positions and civilians, supported the Syrian army and participated in diplomatic processes to resolve the conflict.

In the current conflict, the Russian air force assisted the Syrian army and carried out a series of airstrikes on the outskirts of Idlib and Aleppo. In particular, a Russian military aircraft launched an air attack on a tent camp in the village of Harbanush in the north of Idlib.

According to preliminary information, seven people, including five children and two women, were killed and twelve were injured as a result of the attack.

"We will continue to support Bashar Assad. Accordingly, we will continue contacts and analyze the current situation. Necessary measures will be taken to stabilize the situation in Syria," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said yesterday.

These words confirm Russia's unwavering support for the Syrian government in the ongoing conflict.
