UN accuses Israel* of crimes against humanity

Following the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the Palestine Red Crescent Society are calling on the international community to take decisive action against Israel.

According to UNRWA, many families in Gaza are forced to survive on just one meal a day, and some are forced to eat foods that are dangerous to eat. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the number of wounded and dead. Due to a shortage of medicines, even basic painkillers are unavailable.

Younis al-Khatib, president of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, also accused Israel of crimes against humanity and called for sanctions:
"I cannot stand by and watch my friends and employees being killed by a state. Israel is disregarding our symbols and international law. If any other state had done this, it would have been sanctioned long ago."

In a statement, a UNRWA spokesperson said that Israel's* plan to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip was in violation of international humanitarian law. It said the plan was aimed at forcibly displacing the population and was an attempt to achieve military results inside Gaza by using starvation as a weapon. UNRWA strives to distribute aid fairly and independently, regardless of political affiliation. It also said that allegations that aid was reaching factions or resistance movements were unfounded.
