Trump signs order to close US Department of Education
Donald Trump has fulfilled his campaign promise and signed an executive order to dismantle the country's Department of Education.
According to Reuters, Trump accused the department of inefficiency, citing the trillions of dollars invested in it as not having delivered the expected results, and the department's accusations of indoctrinating young people with racial, sexual, and political ideas as the basis for this decision.
School governance in the US is currently divided into federal, state, and local levels, and the White House administration aims to devolve education policy to state and local boards.
Public school funding in the country is largely provided by state and local governments, while the federal budget is focused primarily on low-income schools and special programs. However, closing the department entirely would require congressional approval.
