Trump gives Iran two months to comply with nuclear deal
Donald Trump has sent a stern letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, giving Iran two months to reach a new nuclear deal, Axios reported. The letter warned that Iran could face dire consequences if it refused to negotiate.
Trump has said he does not want "negotiations that last a lifetime." The publication reported that if Iran rejects US conditions, Washington or Israel could launch a military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Trump previously said in an interview with Fox News that he had first sent a letter to Khamenei. He later said that relations with Iran had reached "the final frontier" and that the country could not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Iranian leader Ali Khamenei called Trump's offer of talks a "deception" and said the US was trying to make Iran appear to be refusing to negotiate.
According to the IAEA, Iran currently has a stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent, which could be enough to create a nuclear weapon if increased to 90 percent. Tehran strongly denies that it has any such plans.
