The United Nations Security Council adopted a draft resolution demanding an immediate end to Yemeni Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
The draft resolution presented by the United States and Japan to the UN Security Council was voted on. The draft resolution was adopted by the 15-member UN Security Council with 11 votes in favor and 4 abstentions.
Three amendments requested by Russia, which abstained from the vote, were vetoed. Russia warned that the draft law could lead to new rules in the field of international law, demanding to change some statements in the draft law and to include the situation in Gaza.
Russia stated that the situation in the Red Sea is directly related to Israel's attacks on Gaza and asked to refer to it in the decision.
The resolution strongly condemned the 24 attacks by the Houthis on commercial ships in the Red Sea since June 19, 2023, and demanded an immediate end to the attacks.
The resolution calls on the Houthis to release the crew of the Israeli-affiliated merchant vessel Galaxy Leader and states that "the rights and freedom of navigation of commercial vessels must be respected in accordance with international law."
The document also emphasized that member states have the right to protect their ships from attacks based on international law, and noted the need to eliminate the root causes of conflicts that lead to regional tensions.
