The South Korean parliament failed to gather enough votes to impeach the president
As a result of the ruling party's deputies leaving the hall in South Korea's parliament, there were not enough votes for the president's impeachment. The opposition announced that they will not stop their efforts to bring the president to justice.
South Korea's parliament failed to gather enough votes to impeach President Yoon Seok-yol, who declared martial law in the country. This was reported by Reuters.
According to the rule, 200 out of 300 deputies had to vote in favor of impeachment. However, 105 out of 108 deputies of the ruling "People's Power" party refused to vote and left the assembly hall.
The opposition said that efforts to bring the president to justice will not stop.
During the meeting, several thousand protesters gathered in front of the parliament demanding impeachment of the president and his arrest. According to the BBC Russian service, the crowd followed the ruling party deputies leaving the meeting with angry shouts.
On December 7, Yoon Seok Yol addressed the nation on television and apologized to the people of the country for the decision to introduce martial law.
On the evening of December 3, President Yoon Seok-yol declared martial law in South Korea for the first time in 45 years in order to "protect the constitutional order from the "communist forces".
Deputies of parliament opposed the president's decision and voted to overturn it, after which the president lifted martial law.
On December 4, the opposition parties submitted a proposal to the parliament on the impeachment of Yoon Seok Yol. For the impeachment of the President, 2/3 of the deputies of the parliament (300 seats in total) must vote.
It also became known that the South Korean police suspected Yoon Seok-yol of treason and started an investigation.
