The president of South Korea apologized for imposing martial law
South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol apologized for imposing martial law and announced that it is up to his party to stay in office. Today, the South Korean parliament will vote on the bill on the impeachment of the president
In a televised address to the nation, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol apologized for imposing martial law in the country for the first time in 45 years earlier this week, Yonhap writes.
"This decision was taken out of concern," he said. The president added that he will not declare martial law a second time.
Yoon Seok-yol said that it is up to his party to stay in office.
After the address, the leader of the President's People's Power Party, Han Dong-hoon, said that the South Korean leader's early resignation is inevitable, as he is no longer able to carry out public duties.
Don Hoon also called for an early suspension of the president's powers.
On December 7, the South Korean parliament will vote on the bill on the impeachment of the president. For its adoption, the opposition needs the votes of at least 8 deputies from the president's party. Yonhap agency reported earlier that the parliament will vote on the issue of the investigation against the first lady.
Let us remind you that on the evening of December 3, President Yoon Seok-yol declared martial law in the country to protect the constitutional order from "communist forces". Parliamentarians opposed the president's decision and voted to overturn it, after which the president agreed to withdraw his decree.
Also, the South Korean police launched an investigation against Yoon Seok Yeol on suspicion of treason.
