The Gulf of Mexico has become the Gulf of America on Google Maps
Google Maps has officially started renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" for US users. The Verge https://www.theverge.com/news/609772/google-maps-gulf-of-america-rename-mexico reports that the change was made in response to a decision by the administration of President Donald Trump.
On January 25, 2025, Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of the Americas." As a result, Google Maps will display the new name for users in the United States. Users in Mexico will retain the old name, while users in other countries will see both names.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also announced that it will use the name "Gulf of America" on the country's aviation maps. In addition, the Denali peak in Alaska is planned to be renamed McKinley.
