In November 2016, Slovakia passed a law that virtually eliminated Islam as the country's official religion. Because according to this law, religions with at least 50,000 believers in the country can have the status of official religion. In Slovakia, the number of Muslims is about 6,000.

In 2000, a dispute arose over the construction of an Islamic center in Bratislava: the mayor of the capital initially did not allow such a center to be established. Later, the Islamic center began to function, but it was not considered a full-fledged mosque - not all congregational prayers were performed there.
