The Australian government did not issue a visa to Israel's former interior minister
The Australian government has refused to issue a visa to Aelet Shaked, who served as Israel's Minister of Justice in 2015-2019 and Interior Minister in 2021-2022. It was cited as the reason his visit would "offend" parts of Australian society and cause "discord" within the community.
The Australian government has rejected the visa application of former Israeli interior minister Aelet Shaked, reports The Australian.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs informed the former Israeli minister in writing about its decision to apply for a visa to attend a conference in the capital Canberra.
According to reports, Shaked's visa application was rejected because it could "offend" certain sections of Australian society and "cause conflict" within the community.
In a statement to the newspaper, Shaked said Australia's decision was "shameful".
The conference was organized in Canberra by the Council on Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs and the Australian Center for Strategic Studies.
Aelet Shaked served as Israel's Minister of Justice in 2015-2019, and Minister of the Interior in 2021-2022.
