Syria introduces new dress code on beaches

Yesterday, June 10, the Syrian government announced a new dress code for beaches.

Western media outlets report that women will be required to wear a burkini (a full-body swimsuit) on all public beaches. This is one of the changes that has been implemented since the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024.

The country's tourism ministry has said that visitors to public beaches, whether tourists or locals, must take into account the feelings of different segments of society. Women must wear a veil or a loose-fitting robe over their swimsuits when moving between the beach and other areas.

Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salkhani stressed that men are also required to wear shirts under the new regulations, and that they are not allowed to go out in public without tops.
