Student sentenced for attacking Tajik mufti

The Supreme Court of Tajikistan has upheld the final verdict against the person who attacked Saidmukarram Abdulkadirzoda, the chairman of the country's Ulema Council.

Muhammadrofe Izzatulozoda, a 24-year-old student, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for an incident that occurred in September 2024. He was found guilty of terrorism and attempted murder.

The other two defendants, Mahmudjon Shodikhanov, were sentenced to 13 years in prison and Kiyomiddin Fayzulloev to 2 years. Fayzulloev was held accountable for failing to report the incident to authorities.

The attack took place on September 11, 2024, near the main mosque in Dushanbe after evening prayers. The mufti was stabbed, but his injuries were not serious and he was sent home after a medical examination.

Abdulkadirzoda later announced that the attack was carried out by a member of an extremist group.
