Saudi Arabia plans to legalize the sale of alcohol

Saudi Arabia plans to allow the limited sale and consumption of alcohol in some tourist and diplomatic zones from 2026. The decision is part of efforts to boost international tourism and prepare for major events such as EXPO 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The new rules cover 600 locations: five-star hotels, luxury resorts, diplomatic areas and tourist hubs such as Neom, Sindalah Island and the Red Sea project. However, liquor with an alcohol content of more than 20 percent will remain banned. Alcoholic beverages will not be sold or consumed in stores, public places or in homes.

Officials say the experiment has worked well in the UAE and Bahrain. Alcohol is sold only in licensed venues and by trained staff. Alcohol sales are strictly monitored and violations are dealt with severely.
