Russian prosecutor's office calls fatwa on polygamy contrary to Russian values

The Prosecutor General's Office of Russia has submitted a proposal to the chairman of the Religious Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation on polygamy, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source in the monitoring agency.

"The theological conclusion of the Council of Ulema of the Religious Administration of Muslims of Russia dated December 17, "The issue of polygamy in Russian Muslim society," contradicts the current legislation and legislative acts in the field of preserving the foundations of state family policy and strengthening traditional Russian spiritual and moral values. According to him, the Prosecutor General's Office noted that the Family Code of the Russian Federation does not allow marriage if one of the citizens is in another registered marriage. The federal law "On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations" stipulates that religious organizations can act in accordance with their internal regulations, as long as they do not contradict Russian legislation.

It should be noted that it was previously reported that the Council of Ulema of the Religious Administration of Muslims of Russia adopted a fatwa permitting polygamy under a number of conditions.
