Russia officially recognizes the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
Russia has become the first country in the world to officially recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Russian diplomat Dmitry Zhirnov said that Putin decided to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan at the suggestion of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The decision "demonstrates Russia's desire to establish a full-fledged partnership with Afghanistan."
We previously reported that Gul Hasan, Afghanistan's new ambassador to Russia, had taken office.
For your information, the Taliban movement was recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia in 2003.
After the Taliban came to power in 2021, Russia began to actively cooperate with them. In December 2024, the State Duma adopted a law that allows the organization to be removed from the list of terrorist organizations by court order. Vladimir Putin signed the law. At the end of March 2025, the Prosecutor General's Office appealed to the Supreme Court to suspend the ban on the Taliban's activities. In April, the court lifted the ban in Russia.
