Now those who miss Friday prayers without a reason will be punished, in Malaysia
Muslims who miss Friday prayers without an excuse in the Malaysian state of Terengganu can be fined 3,000 ringgit (about $710) or face up to two years in prison.
Previously, the punishment was only applied to those who missed three Friday prayers in a row, but under the new amendments, penalties are also provided for missing a single prayer.
As part of the campaign, signs and banners are planned to be installed in mosques in Terengganu reminding people to perform Friday prayers.
Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, the Secretary of State for Information, Propaganda and Sharia Knowledge, stated that the introduction of the law is aimed at fostering a sense of respect for Islamic traditions and preserving the dignity of religion, especially among young people.
The new amendments also increase penalties for those who do not fast during Ramadan and those who harass women in public places.
