Morocco cancels Eid al-Adha sacrifices
King Mohammed VI has decided to temporarily suspend the ritual slaughter of animals in 2025. This was explained by a historic drought and caused public outcry and religious debate.
Morocco has abolished the sacrificial slaughter for the first time in history, due to six years of severe drought and soaring livestock prices.
The king called on citizens to celebrate Eid al-Adha with prayers and generosity, and promised to slaughter a sacrifice on their behalf.
The government banned the animal trade and conducted raids on several homes to confiscate livestock, leading to strong protests and mass demonstrations.
It should be noted that Morocco is one of Israel's close allies. In particular, Morocco purchases military equipment from Israel, allows ships carrying weapons and bombs destined for Israel and intended for use in the massacres in Gaza to enter its ports and refuel. In 2024, the volume of bilateral trade reached $53.2 million.
