Government spokesman Jean-Emmanuel Ouedraogo announced in a statement that on January 14, members of a criminal group that planned a coup against the transitional government were captured.

Ouedraogo noted that many soldiers, civilians and activists were involved in the coup attempt, and the investigation process is ongoing.

The current head of the transitional government, Captain Ibrahim Traore, assumed the presidency on September 30, 2022, ousting Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who came to power in a coup d'état.

Damiba took power in January 2022 by overthrowing then President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.
