Islam is the most popular religion among pupils, according to a study by the Department of Education on religious beliefs in primary schools in Vienna. This is reported by Austria Today.

35% of students in public primary schools are Muslims, 21% are Catholics, 13% are Orthodox, and 26% do not believe in any religion.

The official announcement was made on Tuesday by Christoph Wiederker, Vice-Burgomaster and member of the Municipal Board of Education (NEOS). Seeing the religiosity of Muslim youth and their conflict with European values, he called for mandatory lessons on "Living in Democracy" for all students starting from the first grade.

It was said that the aim was to teach about democracy, values and ethics, as well as about the world's major religions.
